Healthy diet and chiropractic
Your local chiropractor would like to remind you that your diet is critical to maintaining a healthy body. There is much debate over the effectiveness of low carb and low fat diets, but these refer to weight loss strategies and not a daily healthy diet. In order to maintain a healthy diet, you need to include all of the basic food groups and avoid junk food. Below are some fundamentals to help you get started.
Eliminate refined white flour from your diet. Refined white flower is commonly found in white bread, white rice, pasta, and tortillas. Replace these items with their whole grain counterparts like whole grain bread, long grain or brown rice and whole wheat pasta. There are also whole grain choices for tortillas available as well.
Eliminate white sugar from your diet. White sugar is a simple carbohydrate that causes a spike in blood sugar, followed by an energy dump. White sugar is also full of empty calories that have no nutritional value. It can be found in candy, cakes, soda, and other common junk foods. Sugar also slows healing, accelerates tissue breakdown and has no intrinsic health benefits to speak of.
Eliminate damaged fats from your diet. Damaged fats include polyunsaturated oils, margarine, hydrogenated oils (e.g. vegetable shortening), and any foods containing them. It would logically follow then that deep fried foods are also on the list of forbidden foods. You can replace damaged fats with hard to damage fats such as olive oil, nut oil (sunflower oil) and tropical oil.
When possible, choose organic meat – Eating naturally raised meats that are grown without hormones, antibiotics, and chemical-filled feed are preferred. This includes fish, seafood, poultry, eggs, and grass-fed beef, lamb, and other game. Grass fed beef has been proven to be lower in fat, carbohydrates and higher in Omega-3 than grain fed, non-organic meat.
Choose milk and milk products from organically raised cows like whole yogurt and raw cheeses. Full fat varieties are preferred over low fat varieties because the fat serves a specific purpose. Without it, the body cannot absorb the vitamins found in dairy products.
Eliminate unhealthy beverages- These would include soda, coffee, alcohol and juice that has high fructose corn syrup. Water and milk are the best choices for your body. Filtered water is recommended over tap water that is treated with chemicals. If you absolutely must drink soda, choose one of the healthier varieties that are found in health food supermarkets.
If you are unsure exactly where to begin, give your chiropractor a call. Chiropractors are well versed in healthy diets and can design one specifically for you.
